PNG Deals: Remote diving at its best

Papua New Guinea is certainly the destination of choice for those Scuba Divers wishing to explore where very few venture. Remote diving at its best, Tufi offers everything from Macro to Reef and Hammerhead Sharks, Pilot Whales & Mantas…..

With our CEO Matt having worked at Tufi last year and generating a further 12 dive sites to the already mapped 24, we can guarantee you an amazing time hosted by the resort Manager and his wife (Brian & Roya)……

Top Tips

The best of the diving at Tufi is on the outer reefs, the best time of year to ensure that you will get out there without any troubled seas is between the end of October and mid April, ultimately the absolute best is dec-Mar.

During the period of Mid april to mid October we cannot guarantee that you will successfully reach the reefs due to the prevailing trade winds coming from the South- East. From my personal experience it can be very frustrating to be sat in a beautiful hill top resort looking over the Fjords and to the Solomon Sea knowing you are not going to get out there.

All is not lost though, due to the volcanic landscape Tufi is surrounded by Fjords which create great dive sites, particularly for the macro fanatic and wide angled silhouette shots.

Papua New Guineas First Shark Guardians

With assistance from Matt Tufi became the first Shark Guardian resort in Papua New Guinea last year, and for very good reason too. The majority of Outer Reef dives will have various reef sharks on display and the extremely rare White Hammerheads (yes, there is more than 1 of them and its simply fantastic to witness). Remember to look out for the Leopard Shark around ‘Matt’s Happy Place’

How To Get There

You can fly direct into Port Moresby from a multitude of airports, Manila, Cairns, Singapore to name just a few. Once in Port Moresby you will need to board a connecting flight to Tufi (flight time 45 mins).

The flights in and out of Tufi:

Domestic flights from Port Moresby to TUFI Resort are as follows:
Monday: Depart Port Moresby 08:35am
Wednesday: Depart Port Moresby 2:30pm
Fridays: Depart Port Moresby 2:30pm

All flights return back to Port Moresby 1 hour 50 minutes later.

We can arrange your flights for you when you book a retreat to Tufi and for those planning a group booking we can also quote you for a private charter through TropicAir, again, just let us know and we’ll get the details for you.

What Is Available?

Tufi has a large stock of dive equipment available for hire which you can order prior to arrival or just add it to your room bill once on location. For those not wishing to dive all the time, the dive shop also stocks various other water sports equipment such as Canoes, Kayaks, Stand Up Paddle Boards & Hobby Cats. Fishing is also available if you fancy catching your own Sashimi which will be prepared for you by the resort chef as a pre-dinner bar snack.

Oro province is years behind the rest of the world, the scenery is simply stunning and undisturbed, the local villagers living off the land and sea and will all greet you with a smile eager to display their traditions. Another top tip is to add a bit of culture into your stay, they have fantastic demonstrations and rest assured that if you go for a wander through the villages you’ll be greeted with smiles and waves with the odd “Oro” shout (Welcome).

The Diving Day

As a general rule of thumb you can book a 3 dive outer reef package which entails leaving the jetty around 8am, diving 3 dive sites, eating lunch on the boat and returning to the resort between 230-430pm (depending on travel time to the dive sites). Alternatively a 2 dive outer reef package has you back at the resort for no later then 1pm ready for lunch. The afternoons and evenings are free for you to dive from the jetty if you so wish, and with most packages the sunset/ night dives are free of charge (we will inform you of this inclusion with your booking).

There are also a number of Wrecks within Tufi’s vicinity, The Pistoff B25, the BlackJack B17 & the S’Jacob merchant ship. The house reef also contains a number of fishing vessel Wrecks and the skeletal remains of a PT boat. All bar the PT boat dives incur additional charges, please inquire or check the Tufi website for updated details.
