Know before you go

How do I get there?

The Galapagos Islands have access via two domestic airports from mainland Ecuador.

  • San Cristobal (SCY)
  • Baltra, Santa Cruz (GPS)

7-Night cruises will embark and disembark on San Cristobal whilst 10-Night cruises will alternate the arrival and departure ports between the two islands. One-way cruises are highlighted in their itinerary.

You can check the flight routes here

Do I need a visa for this trip?

A valid passport, with at least six months and one day remaining before expiration, is required to enter Ecuador. It is the passenger's responsibility to check with local immigration offices or the Ecuadorian Consulate prior to travelling to determine if a visa is necessary. You can also check online at iVisa travel.

What level of dive training is needed for these trips?

Advanced Open Water or equivalent with at least 60 logged dives.

Nomadic Scuba top tip:

If you do not have experience in strong currents then we would recommend diving elsewhere before embarking on a Galapagos adventure. For the safety of you and others, guides may prevent you from diving if they feel your in-water experience is insufficient. If you are unsure, please speak to us as we have first-hand experience of diving in the Galapagos and we would hate for you to spend and not be able to enjoy all the diving opportunities.

What are the dive conditions like?

There are two “seasons” for Galapagos diving:

WHALE SHARK SEASON (from June to November)

The water is cooler, 60-75°F, 15-24°C.

MANTA SEASON (December through May)

The water is warmer, clearer 68-82°F, 18-28°C

MONEY - Can I pay by card/ phone during the trip?

The local currency is the United States Dollar (USD).

Cash is widely accepted if you intend visiting any of the local stores to by souvenirs etc. You can pay by card/ tap and go at some places, however, be prepared to a surcharge for doing so. Smaller guest houses may not offer digital payment options.

Nomadic Scuba Top Tip: Make sure you inform your bank that you will be travelling overseas. It is not uncommon for banks to block card use if they are not aware of your trip.

We use WISE for all of our transactions, and we save hundreds on pointless fees and brutal exchange rates. If you have yet to open an account, we strongly urge you to do so (it takes 5 minutes). Follow the link below and if you need a hand, we are here to help.

Do I need dive insurance for this trip?

Absolutely, without a doubt! Comprehensive travel and diving insurance is essential for planning any scuba diving trip. Many operators require proof of both before allowing you to participate in their activities or use their services here's why.

We recommend DiveAssure for both dive and travel insurance. You can choose between single-trip or annual coverage.

To arrange your insurance now, please use this link -DiveAssure registration.

Are there any medical reasons why I cannot dive?

Operators providing dive services will require you to complete an RSTC medical declaration. Should you need to answer ‘YES’ to any of the questions then you will need a doctor to sign as authorizing you to be medically fit to dive. You can find an example of the RSTC medical questionnaire here.

What type of power sockets are on board?

110/AC 60 cycle Type B (the same as in North and Central America) with some 220 outlets on the dive deck.  The main lounge area and all cabins have Type B outlets.

Do we need to use a dive guide?

Yes, to protect the parks - Rule 1 of the Galapagos National Park states that all visitors "must be accompanied by a naturalist guide authorized by the GNPD."

Can I extend my stay and do more than one trip?

Of course! You can book back-to-back trips on Galapagos Sky (availability allowing) and receive a 5% discount. We have also compiled travel plans that tag on various dive locations including Mexico and the Caribbean. Let us know what you are looking for and set us to work.
