Know before you go

How do I get there?

Before or after a liveaboard trip: Let us know your dates and times and the team at Spice Island Divers can assist with your transfer to or from the boat.

Domestic Airport: Ambon, Maluku (AMQ)

There are multiple daily flights into Ambon from across Indonesia. Internationally you will need to connect through the larger main airports such as Jakarta, Manado, Sorong etc.

Here's an easy way to see all the Flight Connections

Airport transfers are available and are complimentary for anyone staying longer than 3 nights.

Do I need a visa for this trip?

Visa on arrival is available for many countries which costs USD35. However, VoA
also tends to attract significant delays with queues etc.

Nomadic Scuba's advise: To get ahead of the game use the online portal and arrange your visa before you leave home.

Check it out: https:/molina.imigrasi.go.id/

What level of dive training do I need for this trip?

Diving in Ambon is suitable for all levels of diver, including beginners. At times you will experience some current but as long as you have good buoyancy you will have no issue.

Nomadic Scuba top tip: If you find your fins wandering a little on a dive, move yourself a few meters away from the dive site, reset your trim and balance and then
return to the macro action.

What is the climate and weather like?

Ambon enjoys an equatorial (or tropical rainforest) climate. The annual average maximum temperature in Ambon is 30°C / 86°F (ranging from 29°C in August to 31°C in January). Annual rainfall is 3450mm, with a minimum of 151mm in October
and a maximum of 462mm in June.

Warmest month - December (29ºC / 84ºF)

Coldest Month - August (27ºC / 80ºF)

Wettest Month - June (268mm / 10.5in)

Driest Month - August (91mm / 3.5in)

MONEY - Can I pay by card/ phone on the trip?

The local currency is the Indonesian Rupiah (IDR).

You can pay by card at the resort however, it is always wise to take some cash for small items and tips etc.

Nomadic Scuba Top Tip: We use WISE for all of our transactions, and we save hundreds on pointless fees and brutal exchange rates. If you have yet to open an account, we strongly urge you to do so (it takes 5 minutes). Follow the link below and if you need a hand, we are here to help.

Do I need dive and travel insurance?

Absolutely, without a doubt! Comprehensive travel and diving insurance is essential for planning any scuba diving trip. Many operators require proof of both before allowing you to participate in their activities or use their services here's why.

We recommend DiveAssure for both dive and travel insurance. You can choose between single-trip or annual coverage.

To arrange your insurance now, please use this link -DiveAssure registration.

Are there any medical reasons why I cannot dive?

Operators providing dive services will require you to complete an RSTC medical declaration. Should you need to answer ‘YES’ to any of the questions then you will need a doctor to sign as authorizing you to be medically fit to dive. You can find an example of the RSTC medical questionnaire here.

What are the dive conditions like?

Dive site summary

Depth ranges: 5 - 35m

Visibility: 5 - 15m

Currents: Gentle but can be occasionally strong

Surface conditions: Calm the majority of the time

Water temperature: 26 - 29°C

Experience level: Beginner - advanced

Number of dive sites: Greater than 20

Nomadic Scuba top tip: Make sure your buoyancy is on point. The floor is alive with macro on the Ambon dive sites, so you must be aware of your position in the water and protect the critters.

Do we need to use dive guides?

Yes, aside from Indonesian law, forbidding any visitors diving without a local guide or instructor, the guides are crucial in experiencing Ambon's critters. They are also experts in photography support, not only locating the critters but then being able to assist with your lighting setup or even modelling.

Nomadic Scuba top tip: Tune in to your guide, and don't tune out. They are worth their weight in gold!

Can I extend my stay?

Of course! If you wish to stay longer simply let us know and we will arrange the quote for you. We first found Spice Island Divers during a month long trip through the Banda region and absolutely fell in LOVE with the place. It was the best part of our trip by far. We are confident that if you book a week you are going to want more!
